The Importance of Having a Bookkeeper

In business, the most important thing that defines success is whether you are making money. Often it can be difficult to determine just how much you’re making if you cannot pinpoint your sales and expenditure.

That’s where bookkeeping comes into the equation; we’ll be discussing why bookkeeping is just so important and the benefits of having a designated bookkeeper.

What is bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping is the process of recording all financial transactions within the business; all expenditures are accounted for to ensure that you have a firm grip on your expenditure. Bookkeepers will record all of this data chronologically, allowing you to track the success of your business. (Source: Smallbizaccountants.com)

Why should I hire a bookkeeper?

There are a number of benefits to hiring a qualified bookkeeper to manage your business’s finances. The most obvious reason that comes to mind is having someone readily manage and analyse your financial situation. Sales figures are often something that people can get obsessed with, but rising sales figures aren’t the be-all and end-all. Large profit can only come from a controlled expenditure, and if you aren’t tracking how much you’re spending – you could be losing out on a significant amount of profit.

Security is another big factor, unfortunately, there have been cases of employees within a business conducting fraudulent acts and taking money from the company. If you aren’t tracking your finances, it can be easy to miss but with an objective bookkeeper, such acts are caught out. This is a situation that nobody really wants, but it is worse if the fraud is carried out successfully.

Tax returns are made so much easier; bookkeepers will track all information and documents related to tax to provide your annual taxes on time. It will save you time having to scramble to find all of the bills or try and remember all the year’s expenses. You’ll be saved from the embarrassment of having to correct any entries in financial statements.

The final point, which is also very important, is the ability to easily and conveniently report to investors at any given time. You’ll have data constantly prepared and you will be able to provide information about how their investment(s) are affecting the company and whether they will get a return (if so, how much).
